Introduction I've been writing ever since I could copy big letters on lined tablets. I wrote my first story when I was seven, the adventures of a mustang mare and her foal. Since then, I've written essays, a dissertation, short stories, poetry and a couple of novels. My work's been published by Story, Appalachian Heritage and Hearst Publications, among others. I've also studied and taught anthropology, exploring the expressive arts of the Southwest. I write about families in this troubled world, about my husband's and my struggle with his worsening dementia, about the power of culture, and how places anchor us and keep us sane. Above all, I write to ponder the mysterious ways that God's grace moves around and through us. I was born in California and have lived all over the US and in Europe. Now I’ve brought my husband back to the West Coast to be by the fog-breathing Pacific Ocean we both love. Five generations of my family lived here before me. I can't call any other place home.
Interests Environmental protection and restoration, conserving agricultural land, concerns and needs of caregivers, Alzheimer's and dementia treatment and care, reading and writing literary fiction, the role of place in human well-being, California's intellectual history (yes, there is one), growing healthy food and gorgeous flowers, staring at the ocean, hiking, dancing and great conversation.
