| Introduction | I started this blog in September, 2006. Mostly, it is where I can talk about things that interest me, which I otherwise don't get to do all that much, about some remarkable people who should not be forgotten, philosophy and theories (like Don Foster's on who wrote A Visit From St. Nicholas and my own on whether Santa is mostly derived from a Norse god) and analysis of issues that concern me. Often it is about books. I try to quote accurately and to say when I am paraphrasing (more and more). Sometimes I blow the first name of even very famous people, often entertainers. I'm much better at history, but once in a while I see I have written something I later learned was not true. Sometimes I fix them, sometimes not. My worst mistake was writing that Beethoven went blind, when he actually went deaf. Feel free to point out an error. I either leave in the mistake, or, if I clean it up, the comment pointing it out. From time to time I do clean up grammar in old posts as, over time I have become more conventional in my grammar, and I very often write these when I am falling asleep and just make dumb mistakes. It be nice to have an editor, but . . . . |
| Interests | History, these days mostly ancient Greece, and 17th - 19th century American History. Also, politics. I'm highly anti-partisan (not bi-partisan) politically and enjoy kayaking and hiking. |
| Favorite movies | If you put a gun to my head Casablanca, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Groundhog's Day, You've Got Mail, Raiders of The Lost Ark series (not including the last), Star Wars IV - VI, Miracle on 34th Street, The March of the Wooden Soldiers, Gandhi and Blazing Saddles, come right to me. |
| Favorite music | Louis Prima, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Bach, Wagner, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky foremost, but many Russian classical composers have long been among my favorites. But most tunes on my ipod are Christmas songs. My tastes are really pretty eclectic. Louis Armstrong said that there are only two kind of musics - good music and bad music. I agree. So, there is music in all genres I like, even if I don't like the genre in general, like rap, country or heavy metal. |
| Favorite books | The Lord of the Rings is my favorite fictional work and The Making of the Atomic Bomb the greatest single volume history book I have read. Will Durant's The Story of Civilization tops the best multi-volume history book list. Autobiographical would be Harpo Speaks and The Snow Leopard. Biographical would be Robert Massie's Peter the Great. Other than that, see my 5/30/07 post on my desert island wish list. |
