About me

Introduction I'm Professor and Chair of English at George Washington University in DC. I've written 2 books: "Crossing the Line: Racial Passing in American Literature and Culture" (Duke UP, 2000) and "Shout, Sister, Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe" (Beacon 2007). I'm currently writing a book about the TV show "Soul!", the amazing showcase of Black arts that aired on PBS between 1968 and 1973. I'm also working on a project--of unknown form--related to my inheritance of more than 200 letters, written by my great-grandparents living under Nazi occupation in Frankfurt, Germany, and sent to my grandparents, who had fled Germany for Philadelphia in 1938-39.
