| Introduction | Hunger, justice, violence, terror, love, repression, deprivation, vengeance, liberty, sacrifice, incarceration, revolution. Forty-one students from the English Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki experiment with and improvise on the issues above borrowed from Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities. How can hunger and deprivation transform us? How unjust can justice be? Can individual desire and common cause converge? What are the limits of love? Is silence the route to violence? How can the weak and the feeble turn into the strong and the mighty? Is there an end to power? In Greece 2011, we read, rewrite, stage and act a 19th-century tale of two distant countries, and add our own voice to this tale of extremities, hope, despair, and confused doubles. |
