| Introduction | Action for the Rights of the Child (ARC) came into existence in 1991 and was the first ever forum set up for promoting the rights of the child in Pune. In 1991, a workshop was organized on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The organizers were Terre des Hommes, Germany, India Programme; India Sponsorship Committee, SNDT -Adult Education Dept and Save the Children, Canada. It was during this workshop that the idea of an advocacy network first came up, and ARC was formed. Ever since ARC has been a very active network on children rights in the city. ARC, though actively functioning in Pune for the last 16 years, is not a separate registered organization. ARC operates on the principle of networking. The Convernership moves from one NGO to another every 3 years. |
| Interests | While accepting that all children have rights, which may often be violated, ARC recognizes that there are differences among children. ARC believes that these inequalities of caste, class and gender are a consequence of complex interplay of structural factors that privilege some sections of society at the expense of others. Hence, ARC commits itself to work for underprivileged children, particularly those among them that are the most socially, culturally and economically vulnerable, marginalized, neglected and discriminated against. The objectives of ARC are as follows : 1) To work towards the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child 2) To sensitise the state, the judiciary and various social, economic, political and cultural forces to the needs and rights of children 3) To study, collate and disseminate information on different aspects of children’s rights and related laws 4) To keep issues related to children alive in the public consciousness especially related to child labour, child sexual abuse and child trafficking 5) To impact upon the policies and programmes related to the vulnerable and disadvantaged children. |
