About me

Introduction In May 2008, we embarked on a 37,000km adventure around the whole of Australia. The mission we set ourselves was to attempt to travel around Australia in a fun, alternative way. We decided to use waste vegetable oil from roadhouses and fish & chip shops to fuel our second hand 4WD (which we called “the Battered Fish” due to the aroma that ascended from the exhaust!), stay in bush camps as much as possible, use bio-degradable products, cook over camp fires, use solar-panels to power the fridge and electrical equipment, catch our own dinner and buy local produce. The adventure finished on 23 December 2008. We travelled just under 37,000 kms, the majority of which was on waste cooking oil. We managed to reach the most Eastern, Northern, Western and Southern points of mainland Australia, do some challenging 4WDriving through creek crossings, over sand dunes and muddy clay, stayed in some unbelievably beautiful bush camps and met some amazing locals (including quite a few crocs!). Please read from the archive sections our blogs on what we got up to in each place. Also, watch this space as this will not be last you hear from the Battered Fish!
