| Introduction | I am interested in land and our relationship to it. I am a mountaineer, soil scientist, wilderness facilitator and father. I have scaled high, imposing walls of rock, climbed to 6,000 meters, and been married for 25 years. I've never been to a gym and I've never eaten at McDonald's. Never ever. I have learned that the most important stuff I do, is not the stuff that I get paid to do. I pursue a passion for wild places and the meaning they hold for us. I aspire to simplicity, and to live a little more like Pippi Longstocking. I admire Robin Hood. I thrive on exploring beyond the comfortable, where there are no well-trodden paths. My mission is to stress the importance of looking below the surface. I am hugely privileged to live in the serenity of the Jonkershoek Mountains, a world heritage site, with my wife Sandra, son Sebastian, daughter Phoebe, two dogs and a cat. When we were all younger, the six of us would regularly go on evening walks together in the forest, but the cat never does anymore. I'm not sure what putt him off. |
