Introduction “Increasingly important for my practice is the relationship between the painting as both physical entity and transcendent, metaphoric object. I want to make a painting that stresses itself as material object and as representation. This work comes about through a process of trying to capture very specific images and ideas and then willfully obstructing them. The paintings themselves are obstructions as well as points of interface. These are joyous objects of contemplation: a bit clumsy, a bit gauche, and unapologetically hopeful.” Dan Callis is a visual artist/educator residing in Southern California. His work includes painting, drawing, and installation. He received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He is currently Professor of Drawing and Painting at Biola University.
