About me

Introduction My interest in language and literacy goes back to when I was a young girl. I remember wondering why learning to read and write was so easy for some and difficult for others, why each year my older brother came ‘top of the class’ and his best friend never learned to read. I went on to study languages, majoring in Japanese for my BA, and then in 1999, while homeschooling/‘unschooling’ my kids, completed adult literacy tutor training. I’ve continued tutoring adult literacy, specialising in one-on-one dyslexia support. Since 2002 I have also developed and tutored workplace literacy and numeracy programmes in a variety of industries. I am fascinated by the way a literacy programme can impact communications as learners become empowered to speak out at work, home and in their communities. I also tutor FLASH (Family Literacy at School and Home) computer and nutrition programmes for parents in local schools. I love working with people and learning from each of my students. As part of my Masters in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education study this semester I will be learning about blogging, online teaching and blended courses. I look forward to sharing ideas with you all.
