| Introduction | “Those who can’t do, teach,” or so the saying goes. I used to chuckle along with everyone else, thinking of all the other professions that have a similar wrap – security guards are wanna-be cops, acting coaches are failed actors, so on and so forth. But now that I am a teacher, I see how offensive that saying is to those of us that CAN DO. I can do. I did do. I can still do. And my future will include lots of doin'. I’m working on a new version of this saying. Something like, “Those who can do, did it, recognized the screwed-up priorities, and now choose to teach!” OR “Those who can do are doing it and teaching it.” You see, I used to work in the private sector as a visual effects producer. I know what it's like to be treated as a professional and have people say, "Wow!" when you tell them what you do. Now when someone says, "Wow!" to me about teaching, I know they get it. |
