| Introduction | My avatar image is of a suitably "marginal" figure: it's a detail of the melancholic observer of Western decadence (and cold-eyed barbarian appraisal of Western weakness) depicted on the left-hand edge of Couture's "Romans of the Decadence." That painting now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay, on a visit to which one of my companions pointed at the melancholic observer and ribbed me by saying "You are totally that guy." Which was true, and still is. It's been my online avatar image for ages. |
