Introduction I was born and raised in eastern North Carolina. Overall, my life has been good. I've had my struggles, but those struggles are either now, or becoming a way to help others. Growing up, I hated school. I didn’t understand how letters could make words. I didn’t learn to read until I was in the 2nd grade, the second time. So what did I grow up to be? A teacher! Because of what I went through as a child, I understand the frustration children feel when they have difficulty in school. Currently I teach English to students from many places around the world. These children are the coolest kids! Many are poor, and have not had an easy life. Some have lived through wars, some were persecuted for their religion, and some were discriminated against because they are members of a particular group of people. Still, they come to school with a smile on their face (when they get used to it), ready to learn. Last year, a 4th grade teacher at my school asked her students what they wished for when they grew up. Many said they wanted to live in a nice house, some said they wanted to be rich so they could buy a nice car. When she came to one of my ESL students, he said, “I want peace for the world”.
