IntroductionWestern New York’s most experienced regional publishing company will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2014. It has published and/or distributed more than 175 books that focus on the region, placing about 330,000 copies into homes, schools and libraries. The company was born on trivial turf. In 1984, the trivia craze was taking the nation by storm. As Buffalo journalist Brian Meyer played a trivia game with friends, he envisioned a game that tests players’ knowledge about their hometown. Western New York Trivia Quotient established Meyer as an up-and-coming entrepreneur. A year later, he compiled a book of quotations that chronicled the feisty reign of the late Mayor Jimmy Griffin. Over the past three decades, Meyer has distinguished himself as one of the region’s most respected journalists. He spent nearly 16 years at WBEN Radio before joining The Buffalo News in 1997. He remains at The News as a digital media producer. In 2010, he was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame. Since 1991, Meyer has been assisted by Michele Ratzel, the company’s business manager. The duo has a half-century of combined experience in the regional publishing arena.
