Introduction Welcome to the Ulster Genealogy & Local History blog. I have a passionate interest in both family and local history as the two disciplines are inextricably linked. I have a particular interest in the Ulster Plantation and its social and economic impact in the period 1600-1800. This blog aims to shine a shaft of light into the past by revealing the sources that are available in this period that can unlock family and local history. I have twenty years research experience in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland an incredible archive that has many miles of shelving containing unique records that cover primarily the historic nine counties of Ulster. This blog will also focus on the methodologies of research that can lead to successful outcomes for those tracing their ancestors in Ulster in the period before civil registration, Irish genealogical research is difficult but not impossible. The key is to locate the sources that pertain to place since townland and parish are an essential component of successful genealogical research.
