| Introduction | Born in Tehran (Iran) in 1979, she lives and works in Paris. After studying visual communication at the Public University of Art in Tehran, she arrived in France in 2004. She was then admitted to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Annette Messager's studio, from which she graduated with Honors in 2008. She subsequently joined Le Fresnoy, the national studio of contemporary arts in Tourcoing. Her work has been shown in several solo and group exhibitions in France, Iran, the United States, and South Korea, among others. In Elika Hedayat's work, reality, memory, and imagination intertwine. All mediums—drawings, paintings, videos, films, installations, performances—are mobilized to tell a story of a world in upheaval, where the everyday shifts into dreams. Her entire production revisits historical references, transposing them into the realm of personal experience or fiction. Her scenarios are populated by both real and political references, fantastic landscapes, and dreamlike characters that are part human, part animal, and part plant, in a constant state of metamorphosis. |
