IntroductionAs a youth art educator, I am self-motivated, dependable with extensive experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds including formal and informal: public schools, museums, community art centers, recreation centers, and camps. I have always had an interest in education and learning through art and in 2010, I pursued my Masters of Science in Art Education at Rochester Institute of Technology and certification to teach in New York State. This intense, lengthy process involved both the classroom and 12 weeks of student teaching. This expanded my philosophy of education and ideas about learning. I believe in curricular integration and lessons plans in art education relating to core subjects. Also, developing research strategies and curriculum planning focusing on projects is an asset of mine. Being an art educator I am always thinking creatively and adapting to new situations and have the ability to take the initiative.
InterestsArtist Statement: In recent years my studio practice has largely been an extension of my work in art education. My artist path is not a straight line, but instead branches continually into various media, processes, and methods of expression. Fiber, is one specific medium I have focused on throughout this creative meandering and continue to foster through projects that address a wide variety of personal interests and experiences. Sewing, knitting or weaving with thread and yarn has becomes a therapeutic methodical story for me. I produce handmade garments to provide warmth and comfort to users, but whose purpose also serves me through the repetitive and meditative nature of the process. I also make objects that address emotional and conceptual issues surrounding my encounters with death, loss, and the eventual healing that must take place. These pieces are often made through a communal effort with other family members or individuals to engage the therapeutic potential of a group. My mother taught me to sew on a machine and my Grandmother taught me to knit continental style. These handmade items have woven together historical markers of my life.
