Introduction I was born and raised in Port Lavaca, growing up on Bonham Street. I attended Harrison, Jefferson, and Madison elementary schools and Travis Middle School. In 1990, I graduated from Calhoun High School. From 1992 to 1997 I attended Sam Houston State University, earning a degree in English. After 10 years as a teacher I went back to college for my Masters degree in political science in 2006. Since graduating, I have worked as a Professor of Government and part-time blogger. My South Texas roots run deep with the first Mauer coming into Indianola in the 1850s. My Great-Grandfather, Frank Kemper, was Calhoun County Commissioner during the Depression-era. At his death, my Great-grandmother Cora took over, becoming the first woman Commissioner in Calhoun County.
