| Introduction | All my school journeys were by train and quite adventurous at the time. Avignon, Rome, Venice, Dubrovnik, Moscow, Leningrad (as it was). This surely fuelled my love of travelling by rail. You can have a meal and a drink, go for a walk, to the loo, wash, shower, sleep, work in comfort on your laptop, chat face to face with friends or just idly watch the scenery whiz by from the comfort of your seat. I’ve never been a trainspotter nor wanted to travel by steam, I endured enough of that in the early 50s. Give me a modern air-conditioned carriage and I’m a happy man. |
