| Introduction | I am an environmental and redevelopment consultant with an interest in the continuing economic, social, and environmental transformation of Midwest cities. Although a geologist by training, I’ve been blessed to spend my career to date working as an environmental consultant, with a primary focus on helping cities and developers to clean up and convert brownfield sites to new and productive uses. My work has provided the opportunity to meet with (and in many instances work with) representatives of more than 100 cities throughout the U.S. that are struggling with the challenges presented by these sites. I am motivated in part to write this blog because of a national narrative regarding the Midwest that is outdated, incomplete or underreported. It’s time to put the “rust belt” and Midwest decline narratives to rest, and to replace them with a new narrative that acknowledges the profound economic, social, and environmental renewal that is already well underway in cities both large and small throughout the Midwest. |
