IntroductionI grew up on a farm in Virginia but my parents exposed my brother and me to Africa from a young age, and I loved it. I received a B.A. in Int’l Studies, focusing on Africa and writing my thesis on the costs and benefits of community and tourism based conservation in Mozambique. About a year after I graduated (having interned for the Africa department of Conservation International) I found myself in Tanzania (Singita Grumeti Reserves), Zambia (African Parks Network) and back to Tanzania (Ker & Downey Tanzania) and somewhere along the way got my pilots license in Virginia. Currently, my husband (Grant Burden) and I manage Mwiba Wildlife Reserve, a private wildlife conservation concession south of the Serengeti. Mwiba is being protected as a wildlife area and offered as a premier safari destination by Ker & Downey Tanzania. This blog documents our experiences there, which include conservation, tourism, community development and the trials and tribulations of living in the bush, as well as other places, people and organizations which we admire who are making conservation in Africa work.
