Introduction Laura Leibman is a Professor of English and Humanities at Reed College. Her area of expertise is early American studies. She is the published author of numerous academic articles on early American life as well as the book Indian Converts (U. Mass Press, 2008). Her book Messianism, Secrecy, and Mysticism: A New Interpretation of Early American Jewish Life (Vallentine Mitchell Press) is now available at amazon. She is currently working with Michael Hoberman on Jews in the Americas, 1621-1826, a four-volume anthology of primary documents. (Pickering and Chatto Publishers, Forthcoming 2013).
