Introduction I have been called a "garden variety pastor," and indeed that is what I am, having spent most of my ministry cultivating rocky little fields with a mostly dulled and rusty hoe. Even so, I have seen the occasional sprig, a verdant shoot of spirit to give me--if not hope, then reason to continue. And just recently I have been given a new garden, brown at the edges but green in the middle, to tend. I have written three books in the last five years (Praying for Dear Life, NavPress, 2006; Every Disciple's Journey, NavPress, 2007; and the forthcoming Shadows, Darkness and Dawn, Upper Room, 2010. I have written and continue to write many essays and blogs for various journals, sites and lectionary commentaries (The Christian Century, Circuit Rider, Biblical Preaching Journal, The Abingdon Preaching Annual, The United Methodist Reporter, Lectionary Homiletics, Feasting on the Word). My wife is an assistant pastor at a large, shimmering inter-denominational congregation. My kids are great. Our bulldog is our family's fascia.
