Introduction Each time you remember something you reinforce the memory but remove it one step further from the event. The imagination fills in details that you didn’t notice at the time. The mind glosses over bits deemed unimportant; the emotions that seemed so imperative at the time fade into obscurity. Sequences fall out of place and unrelated events collide to make an entirely new memory. Before you know it your “memory” is more daydream than chronicle. It is in this meeting of real and imagined that I paint from. An idea or scene will strike me as needing to be reimagined: I pull a bit from here, add a bit there until I see what it should have been originally. I reshape smaller worlds into the better place that I remember.
