| Introduction | Vanity, vanity, all is vanity, thus saith the preacher. Ecclesiastes Ch. 1 Verse 1. But what is vanity? A table and mirror one sits at to put on their makeup? The thoughts of the narcissist? As one who loves words and their meanings I searched out the meaning of vanity. I think it's impossible to understand the book of Ecclesiastes without knowing the meaning of that word. It's found 57 times in the Old Testament and three times in the New Testament (in the American Standard Version). Among the synonyms I found in bible lexicons and dictionaries: Worthless Futility Emptiness Fruitlessness https://webstersdictionary1828.com/Dictionary/vanity https://www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/vanity But the two words that mean the most to me are inutility and brokenness. The word inutility is new to me. It means unusable, useless. If it is inutile it is because it is broken. |
