Favorite Movies I say any movie involving fedoras, down-on-their-luck detectives and/or cigarette smoke-filled rooms grabs my attention. Especially if its plot involves bank heists, con jobs and/or border town murders. Black and white doesn’t equal a classic, but it helps. I think “Bar Fly” is the most romantic movie ever made. The sweatier the western, the better, meaning “Once Upon a Time in the West” is better than “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” which is better than “The Outlaw Josey Wales.” Under my rule, “Roadhouse” becomes the worst western ever made. I’ll watch that documentary with you, maybe even enjoy it, but I’ll be thinking about Universal Studios monster movies the whole time. Zombies. Mummies. Werewolves. No vampires, please, unless they happen fight James Woods. In the end, the scariest movie I ever saw was “Sex and the City, ” sort of like “Dawn of the Dead” in Manolo Blancs. Superhero movies make me feel like a kid, but I’ll pass on fantasy or science fiction stuff. That said, I have seen all three “Starship Troopers” movies. All nudity can be essential to the plot. I hate inspirational teachers, magical minority characters or plots revolving around the spirit of child-like wonder. If it features more than two musical montages, buddy cops or Elvis doing anything beyond singing, then it’s crap. Robin Williams should stop. Just stop. And talking things that don’t normally talk are never, ever entertaining. Unless it’s Marcel Marceau in “Silent Movie.”
Favorite Books Hey, I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but I’m certainly not the dumbest. I mean, I’ve read books like “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “Love in the Time of Cholera, ” and I think I’ve understood them. They’re about girls, right? Just kidding. But I have to say my all-time favorite book is Johnny Cash’s autobiography “Cash” by Johnny Cash. Not my words, but perhaps my sentiments. OK, if pressed, my favorites are Walker Percy, Jose Saramago and Carlos Fuentes. But usually, my favorite book is the next one I read. Especially if recommended by a trusted friend. As for the recommendations of untrustworthy friends, well, that’s how you end up with three copies of “Dianetics: The Evolution of a Science” by L. Ron Hubbard on your bookshelf.
