IntroductionThe Windbreakers ride out of Upland, California, a community of 70,000 residents located 40 miles east of Los Angeles. Upland is located at the base of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains and Mt. San Antonio ("Old Baldy" elev. 10,064'), which form a towering backdrop for the greater Los Angeles region. The land we now call home was once inhabited by the Tongva, or "People of the Earth" 8-10,000 years ago. During the formation of the Spanish missions they were referred to as the Gabrielinos and today they are known as the Gabrielino-Tongva Band of Mission Indians. Their territory was bounded by Malibu to the north and Laguna Beach to the south, and up to 40 miles inland. You can still hear their language in place names such as Tujunga, Topanga, Azusa and Cucamonga. Incorporated as a city in 1906, Upland's city history is one of citrus and stone fruit production which eventually gave way to residential and commercial growth. The community's rich heritage and roots remain, however, as the "City of Gracious Living".
