| Introduction | When I am struck by an incongruity of our times - in politics, organized religion, silly things people say and do, lies we tell ourselves so often that we believe they are true, unquestioned faith without works of kindness - I turn to Mark Twain for relief. Mark Twain used his version of the south western frame story - a method of story telling that begins with a setting or a character, then roams in seemingly unrelated directions and diversions, returning at last to what he called the moral of the tale. Listen to Garrison Keillor for a modern use of a style of story telling invented by Mark Twain. While on stage Mark Twain never laughed. His solitary goal on the stage was to cause the audience to laugh. Because he knew that with all the incongruities of life what people needed most was the healing of laughter. A couple times a year I dress up in white, fit a full wig over a balding head, paste on bushy eyebrows and drooping mustache, light a cigar, switch to southern voice, and stroll on stage with a single goal - audience laughter. But most of the time I am as I'm seen, and use a line or two of Mark Twain simply to bring a smile. |
