Introduction I often hear artists describe their work as a compulsion; as necessary to their being as eating, sleeping, breathing. This is what writing is to me.

I still have a copy of the first book I ever wrote. I was four years old when I made it, on a half-used book of yellow Post It notes found in my father's desk. With blunted pencil I scrawled the tale of a lonely star, twinkling away in the night sky. Illustrations were carefully outlined, words shakily drawn. The entire process took all of about seven minutes; a lifetime, to a child that age.

Fast-forward 20 years, and I'm still at it - this time, though, the process has been somewhat different. Keyboards replaced the pencil, a laptop the Post Its, and it would be fair to say the story is a little more complex. After many months and many changes, my debut novel is at last in its final throes, the draft manuscript on its way to being complete.
