Hera was so annoyed by Echo she cursed her so she could only speak after she was spoken to, and even then only repeat what had just been spoken to her. She fell in love with this guy who didn't love her back and in her grief she waned away to nothing. And that is why we hear Echos! Well, it was something like that, anyway.
