Introduction I am a US government contractor working in Afghanistan as a counter narcotics advisor. I had a 15 year Federal law enforcement career with the US Customs Service engaged in drug interdiction. I have learned, however, that this job has virtually nothing to do with drug interdiction. Instead, it has to do with prevention of the production of opium and addiction. I have previous foreign experience: Some short foreign postings with the USCS, two brief foreign assignments as a contract employee after retirement, six years with Air America as a helicopter pilot in Laos during the ‘60s and ‘70s, and a year in Viet Nam in the US Marine Corps. I have traveled in 40 countries and have spent 4 - 5 months of each of the last six years in Thailand. I hold JD and MPA degrees from the University of Kansas. I have been happily retired for over five years, but during the past year I have become antsy to do something productive for a while. An important part of my job is to help find ways to motivate the Afghan farmers to raise legal crops rather than poppies (from which about 90% of the world's opium is produced). That is the rational for the blog name.
