| Introduction | An American living in France, I moved here for a variety of reasons. Perhaps that which is the most pertinent to this blog was my desire to encounter another culture. The world is so large that it just seemed absurd for me live my entire life in the same place. I suppose that I had a certain desire to be the author of my own fate. When I first moved to France, I fervently tried to improve my vocabulary, interlacing French words to articulate American thoughts. Yet in time, not only were my words becoming more French, but my thoughts as well. I went from thinking in French, to thinking French! This integration afforded me keener insight into the power of culture and its influence upon our understanding of the world and our understanding of our selves; an insight that has provoked a general curiosity with regards to the cultural paradigms that shape the societies in which we live. |
