Introduction	An interest in Medieval Studies (and a refusal to take the 'normal' medieval study abroad route in Western Europe) drove me to explore medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Romania during a 6-week independent study in Spring 2007. While I found the Saxon churches fascinating and the earliest churches in Romania an interesting topic, the painted monasteries of Moldavia really captured my attention. I spent 5 busy months applying and 6 agonizing months waiting for the Fulbright, and I am very excited to see what I can do with an academic year and a not-too-shabby stipend in Romania frumouasa.
