About me

Occupation Retired Geological Engineer
Location Mile High City, United States
Introduction As a retired geological engineer with an interest in history and with a wife very interested in wildlife photography, we love taking RV trips through scenic, historic, and geologically-interesting regions. We do a variety of camping--RV resorts in winter; state parks throughout the West; National Park, Forest Service, BLM, Corps of Engineers, and Bureau of Reclamation campgrounds and dispersed areas on Federal land; and an occasional Walmart or Flying J parking lot for an 8-hour overnight next to an Interstate highway on our way to someplace else. Incidentally, our favorite state/provincial parks in North America are in New Mexico. How can you beat $14/night in a forested mountain valley for a site with electric and water hookups, free hot showers, and an RV dump, with the day pass for the park included in that cost?
Interests My wife and I have been fortunate to have lived in Colorado nearly all our lives (1948 for my wife, 1963 for me). Even better, our jobs took us to every corner of the state, so we have visited every scenic area more than once. My job also took me to every state in the West, most states in the East, and several foreign countries. I began working in Alaska in 1972 and eventually visited every corner of the state, including the Aleutian Islands, except the North Slope. After my wife retired, we took our first RV to Alaska to celebrate retirement. Since then, we have camped in every state west of the Mississippi River and around the Great Lakes. We have also camped in all the Canadian provinces from Ontario to the Yukon. In winter, we leave Colorado and RV south of I-10 in New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, or Texas.
Favorite Books All the "Roadside Geology" books for many states and too many history books to mention! "Canadian Rockies Geology Road Tours" by Ben Gadd, 2009; "Northwest Epic" by Heath Twitchell (son of one of the Army Colonels in charge of construction of the Alaska Highway), 1992; "The Thousand Mile War: WWII in Alaska and the Aleutians" by Brian Garfield, 1969.
