| Introduction | Emotional atheist. Philosopher David Hume famously said: "Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them". The new atheist's worship of "reason" is misleading. In the absence of God, the only recognised source of motivation is emotion/desire. Reason has no motivating power. None. So, reason/rationality is only a means to accurate beliefs, which is a means to reliable fulfillment of desires. Hume also said: "It is not contrary to reason to prefer the destruction of the whole world to the scratching of my finger." So, while reason is useful, the philosophy of desires is actually the future of atheism. Bertrand Russell: "All human activity is prompted by desire... If you wish to know what men will do, you must know ... the whole system of their desires with their relative strengths." So, as atheists, we should move on past the religion debate, and start talking about the philosophy of desires. Otherwise, all the predictions of atheist "nihilism" might come true e.g. Peter Hitchens: "If you drive God out of the world, then you create a howling wilderness" ... |
