| Introduction | When I asked a friend to help describe me for a college essay, he came up with the words "Cynical optimist," not only as a play on my name, but as a part of the two qualities that make me who I am. I often hope for the best in others but am prepared for the worst because I realize nothing meets our expectations. The result: my eclectic interests in the arts, my status as a proud liberal and agnostic in a conservative bible-belt state,and my status as a student in both bioengineering and english, all contribute to the thoughts I represent and provide self-definition. |
