| Introduction | A group of poets, artists and gardeners gathered together for the first time on Marko's allotment in September 2009, to celebrate the transition from summer to autumn. I wanted to make a connection with the landscape through an 'ordinary action', without revealing any particular purpose. I cleared a space the size of a single bed with a hand axe, repetitively attacking the ground like a mad thing. On reflection I think it was almost an impossible task to remove 'purpose' from this action; my attacks felt like I was making a demand on the earth, a demand that could never be fulfilled. I wanted to be close to the soil perhaps even 'prematurely ' in some ways. The repetitive action felt important, it gave an order to human experience emphasising the insignificance of human life in relation to nature. A neighbour had given me some 'hungarian ryegrass' seeds to plant, the action of scattering and watering seeds together as part of a group, seemed to bring an ordering to our 'human experience' in relation to the season's transition; connecting the 'every-body' with the earth. |
