IntroductionI write poetry for the instant gratification of creating something in a short time; unfortunately I have to kill my little darlings and go back and edit them after letting them rest for a bit. But I read it for the same reason, the instant gratification. Poetry is my novel. I can read a good poem and get the same feeling that I get from reading good fiction. I do weave fact and fiction in some of my poetry, and you will find persona poems, as well as narrative; there are all kinds of forms, and some blank verse. But most of my poetry is rhyming and metered. I think that rhyming, metrical poetry is becoming a lost art in the swarm of the prose poetry movement, which exploded with the language poetry of the '70s. My challenge is to appreciate the old traditions, while writing in today's context, and in today's world.
