Introduction As a third year, female, media studies student, I have been conditioned to look critically and analytically at the media, and the representations constructed by such institutes. I think it is fair to say that I have never come across a representation of a women in the media that I can relate to, and the deeper into my degree I get, the more problematic I find this. Throughout the course MIT 3210: Women in the Media, I have come to define myself as a feminist. I have no intentions of burning bras, or hating men, but I hate how women are constructed in the media. These problematic representations range from the way mothers are represented to what it means to be “beautiful”, and they stop nowhere in between. I wish someone could tell me I was wrong, and provide me with a positive, accurate representation of a women in the media, but thus far, I have been right (about this, at least). I think it is important for women of all ages to challenge and question the way they are represented; we need to break free of this unrealistic mold and show the world what we are all about!
