| Introduction | I have spent my life in public service, as an Air Force officer and then civil servant. I believe in the ideals of this country, that it should be, as John Winthrop urged, "a city on a hill." I also believe that we owe it to the world, our nation, our communities and our children to take responsibility for our individual and collective behavior. I agree with Thomas Jefferson, who said: “There is a debt of service due from every man to his country, proportioned to the bounties which nature and fortune have measured to him.” |
