IntroductionRalph currently serves on The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Science’s Alumni Board. He is the founder, editor and writer of The Agricultural View, which is a newsletter promoting agriculture. He is currently consulting, writing and speaking in education and agriculture. Ralph and his wife Alta have five children a son Chad and daughters Kelly, Joel, Julie and Alicia. I certainly miss the kids (my students), however, I am enjoying retirement and keeping very busy.
InterestsMr. Ralph Coffman grew up on a 330 acre dairy farm in Washington County, Ohio. In 1967-68 he served as FFA president of the Warren FFA chapter where he also received his State FFA Degree in 1967. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education. Ralph was selected for a teacher training live classroom instruction video by State Supervisor Welch Barnett in his fourth year of teaching (1976-77). He has coached five Soil Conservation Judging Teams that qualified for the national finals in Oklahoma by placing in the top 2 in Ohio. The 1985 team placed in the top 10 in the United States (9th) which represents more than 7,700 FFA chapters – that placing was the 2nd highest national soils placing in Ohio FFA history. Mr. Coffman has taught four State FFA Officers. He was recognized as the NVATA Region IV National Teacher of the Year in 1992. Ralph was published in the National Agricultural Education Magazine in 1993 He has also trained student teachers for The Ohio State University. In 2005 Ralph was chosen to speak at the (multi-state) North Central Region OAAE Conference addressing college students aspiring to teach Agricultural Education. For 15 years, he served as chairman of the Agricultural Teachers Association, which represents more than 25 schools in four different districts.. Mr. Coffman also served as a State Agricultural Teacher’s Association officer in 1983-84. After 35 years of teaching, Ralph retired as the Agricultural Education / FFA instructor at Fort Frye High School June 30, 2008. He has received his Honorary Chapter, State and American FFA Degrees.
