| Introduction | Boston is a city renowned for many things. It is the Hub of the Universe and claims to be the most European city in the United States. More importantly, it is the city with the richest sports history and the most colorful figures. Boston has achieved the pinnacle of glory in the four major sports multiple times. Having spent my formative years in Massachusetts, I can rightly claim to be an expert in this topic. My favorite time period was 1981-1987. There was no better sports city in the world during those years than Boston. The Red Sox made the World Series; the Patriots the Super Bowl; Doug and Darren Flutie, Gerard Phelan, Mike Ruth, Troy Stradford, et al, whupped Miami; and of course, the greatest basketball team ever (1986 Celtics) led by the greatest basketball player ever (Larry Bird) dazzled us year after year and made us all wish they could play forever. Today, Boston is the hub of the sports universe once more. The Patriots have won 3 Super Bowls; the Celtics just awoke from a twenty year slumber; and our beloved Sox are fighting for a third World Series in four years. How spoiled can one person be? |
