| Introduction | Longevity runs in my family. "Lucky" might come to mind. What I didn't know is that this comes with strings attached. My Grandma Helen lived to 101, my Father will be 90 this year and my Mother is pushing 80. Our family discussed Family Trusts, Wills and DNR releases. We never discussed long-term care, Medicaid complexity (coverage choices and share of cost), or quality of life requirements. Caregiving is the hardest thing I have ever done. It not only tested my physical and emotional endurance but introduced me to a new world. I'm a self described advocate now. While the caregiving gig was mostly temporary, advocacy of the issues listed will continue. I encountered blatant benefit misrepresentation, treatment discontinued based on age and a Dr "forgetting" cause of death (still trying to figure out how that happens). |
