| Introduction | KATHY FITZGERALD, with her husband, Tim, is co-owner of Fitzgeralds Gardening of Oak Island, NC. A Virginian by birth and education (University of Virginia ’76), she attended a wedding in upstate New York after graduation and stayed on for 20 years. There she met Tim while working toward her private pilot’s license. In 1997, they ran away from home to settle in a place neither had ever set foot on before (romantic details available upon request). The following year, they had business cards made and plunged into garden design, installation and maintenance, a practice they continue to this day. Over the years, Kathy published a regional piece in Fine Gardening, and six articles (so far) for American Nurseryman, two of them featured on the cover. Carolina Gardener also uses her talents regularly. She writes a column for the St. James Plantation monthly magazine, CatTales, producing informative and entertaining articles since 2007. Recently she also provides monthly garden maintenance tips for the web newsletter, ThisWeek St. James. Her catalog of rejected proposals from an increasingly in-bred publishing industry continues to grow. Nonetheless, she perseveres. |
