Introduction I think I always hated school (at least until college). I had no idea whether I was smart or dumb--I suspected 'dumb,' and every test or homework assignment felt like it was in the way of something interesting that I wanted to do. And impossible. I studied what I liked and ignored what I didn't. My grades---uh---showed it. But I got to college and fell in love with ideas. It turned out I wasn't that dumb. And I've been a professor for 50 years, dedicating all of it to making school as NOT hateful as possible. I promise to keep trying.
