| Introduction | As a young man, I seriously set out to help our farmers "develop". I realized then that they did not need my seriousness. Really. They told me in silence that they have yet lots of stories to tell me to bring laughter into my life and help me be transformed. I decided to write those silent stories knowing not that that is a daunting task. How many life times do I have to take even a drop out of that ocean? Then I studied Landscape Architecture, hoping to understand the culture-nature interconnectedness. That paid off and created in me a lover of cultural landscapes. In the landscapes that co-evolved with indigenous communities, I saw the age-old wisdom, hopes and aspirations of the people written on. Sadly, the so called modernization is overwriting this subtle treasure. Could trying to capture the eroding physical and mental landscape in stories help? As the best means at my disposal, I started to do that and am praying for a thousand lives of writing to have an impact or a thousand writers to arise and stand with indigenous people in their straggle to withstand the onslaught of the blind forces of modernization. |
