Introduction Edward Echwalu’s love for journalism became evident from the very first time his mother read for him bed time stories with picture illustrations. He became interested in photography and writing. It was out of this desire that Edward joined Makerere University Kampala in 2005 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mass Communication, with a bend towards Photojournalism. Inspired to turn around his journalism career, Edward co-founded, the first online independently owned student university newspaper in Uganda called The Ivory Post (www.theivorypost.com) in March 2007. In The Ivory Post, he wrote for the different sections holding the positions of News and Photo Editor. Before this, he was a freelancer at The Weekly Guardian in Kampala. On completion of his degree in 2008, he joined The Daily Monitor as a freelancer then crossed to The Weekly Observer. The Weekly Observer is an independent newspaper formed by a team of young vibrant journalists who broke away from the country’s leading independent daily, The Daily Monitor in 2004.
