| Introduction | St. Lawrence was Archdeacon of Rome during the third century. Pope Sixtus II entrusted him with the responsibility of using Church resources to care for the poor and the sick.
A legend, told by St. Ambrose of Milan, grew that Emperor Valerian demanded Lawrence turn over the Church's riches to the empire. Lawrence appeared in Valerian's court with Rome's downtrodden people, telling the emperor that these were the Church's greatest treasures. Infuriated by such defiance, Valerian ordered Lawrence's death. While being roasted alive on a gridiron, Lawrence gave praise and thanks to God, and mocked the emperor for his paganism and unbelief. He is purported to have remarked "I'm finished on this side, you'd better turn me over." This is a man who knew how to die--defiant, joyful, and witty to the last. True or not, this story offers us an inspiring model to follow. His feast day on the liturgical calendar is August 10. |
