| Introduction | Camping Unlimited is a non-profit organization, founded by Alex Krem with the help of parents, teachers and friends of the developmentally disabled. Mr. Krem was a special education teacher who successfully included children with special needs into a public school environment. After he developed an interest in working with people with disabilities and entered the teaching profession, he saw the need for recreational pursuits for the developmentally challenged that would lead to their personal growth. In 1961, the organization known as Camping Unlimited became a tax-exempt corporation and in 1965, forty-five acres were purchased in the Santa Cruz Mountains near Boulder Creek as a permanent campsite. In the beginning, the camp was made up of rough wooden platforms with tents. Over the years, with the help of volunteers and donations, Camp Krem has been improved with the addition of buildings, a paved road, hiking trails, and a large swimming pool specially adapted for use by the disabled.
