| Introduction | India has a vast and beautiful collection of wall paintings. These paintings are housed in temples, Monasteries, Mosques, Churches, Palaces, Havelis, Caves among others. Of them the most famous ones are those at Pitalkhora, Ajanta, Ellora, Bagh, Badami, Sittanvasal etc. However, there are a plethora of wall paintings that have still not been discovered. Due to the lack of awareness, these sites have been suffering various stages of deterioration in different forms. The Wall Painting Directory (WPD) has been initiated for the purpose of precise identification of wall painting sites in India. It is administered by the Art and Material Heritage Division of INTACH to document wall painting sites so as to combat upcoming threats. To achieve these objectives, the methodology subsumes elements such as symbolism, iconography and iconology. In addition to this, the WPD project also focuses on documenting Rock Art Sites as a result of which an umpteen number of rock art sites from the states of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh etc have been listed. |
