Introduction SLAers UNITEd group (pronounced SLAYERS) (a.k.a. unemployed English Majors) with an ax (not axe, this isn’t England) to grind. We are not exactly luddites, but we do not fully embrace the technology thing--which seems solely based in mass consumerism and corporate welfare. We also digress--ahem, we happen to have faith in our country, and yet somehow feel something has gone terribly wrong. Are we obsessed with 1985? Not really. (We can't think of one movie or one band that sticks out as a 1985 benchmark. D. Boone died in 1985. Does that count?) Are we bitter? You betcha! Our resources are few, but we read a lot, and care about the continuance of literature and the arts, and yet can’t seem to support our lifestyle (it’s time artist and writers were paid for their time!) Did we mention our bitterness? But there is hope! While walking (yes, we do that too) through the People's Republic of PDX, we happened upon a statue of Henry Scott, a prominent publisher from the turn of the century (1900s). We said, A publisher? Wow, you mean they were once idolized and memorialized in stone? You mean someone besides Robert E. Lee was once a somebody? Cool! We want that!
